Coastal Vascular & Vein Center brings new LimFlow procedure to South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. - EntSun -- FDA-approved technology gives patients facing major amputation a new option for limb
preservation
Coastal Vascular & Vein Center (CVVC) announced it has successfully performed a LimFlow
procedure, an advanced FDA-approved treatment for patients facing major amputation, at its
outpatient ambulatory surgery center.

It's the first time the technology has been used at an ambulatory surgery center in South Carolina, and only the second time it's been performed in the Lowcountry.
The procedure is reserved for patients with advanced chronic limb-threatening ischemia who are not candidates for traditional surgical bypass and have exhausted all options for reopening their own blood vessels. Without it, these patients face a near-100 percent likelihood of an above- or below-the-knee amputation. LimFlow raises the chance of saving the limb to an estimated 75 percent, and it does so without incisions.

CVVC moved quickly to bring the technology to patients once it was cleared for ambulatory
surgery centers.
"This is the one we've really been waiting for," said Dr. Sean J. Hislop, vascular surgeon and
medical director of CVVC. "There are plenty of patients out there who've exhausted all the
traditional options, and for those patients, this is truly a limb-saving option."

Minimizing time under anesthesia is also a key benefit of the approach, which is completed in
less than two hours. "The longer someone's under anesthesia, the higher risk they are for a complication," Dr. Hislop said. "The quicker you can do a procedure safely, the better it is for the patient."
Approved by the FDA in 2023, the LimFlow System restores blood flow to the foot by sending it through the other side of the capillary bed. This pressurizes the veins and forces oxygenated blood backward through the capillary bed, redirecting circulation to areas that had been severely compromised and giving tissue the best chance to heal.

While CVVC already achieves strong outcomes clearing arteries through conventional methods in most patients, LimFlow addresses the subset whose advanced disease prevents them from using traditional options.
"This is a milestone not only for our practice but for the state of South Carolina, which has
consistently been in the top three states in the nation for major lower extremity amputations," Dr. Hislop said. "It is a leap forward in limb preservation for patients who have exhausted all other options for restoring blood flow to their legs."

Dr. Hislop credits the practice's independence for its ability to adopt the technology so quickly.
"I think the key is being in this kind of integrated practice where you have all the options available for the arteries, for the veins, and also advanced and extensive wound care that provides the patient the best opportunity to heal and save a limb," Dr. Hislop said.
