City of Tacoma Continues Working on 'Roadmap to Recovery'
EntSun News/11096755
~ In a recent financial forecast for its 2027-2028 Biennial Budget, the City of Tacoma has unveiled its "Roadmap to Recovery" plan. This proactive, multi-year strategy aims to protect core services, balance the budget, and secure the city's long-term fiscal health.
During a City Council study session update today, officials highlighted the ongoing impacts of compounding macroeconomic pressures on municipal operations. They also discussed the measures that will be taken to address these impacts.
One of the key actions being taken is a hiring freeze in the General Government department. This freeze has identified positions that will be held through the end of the year, resulting in $7.4 million in savings. Additionally, one vacant deputy city manager position will remain unfilled.
The City is also prioritizing structural savings over time by looking for new ways to work and deliver value to the people of Tacoma. As part of this effort, the Environmental Services and Public Works departments will be merged into one department overseen by a single director starting January 1, 2027.

In addition, changes are being made within various departments to streamline operations and improve efficiency. The human services, housing, and homelessness response staff will now work together as a team within the Neighborhood & Community Services department. The labor relations staff will become part of the Human Resources department and Continuous Improvement staff will join the City Manager's Office.
Despite these challenges, the City remains committed to addressing them with caution and deliberation while maintaining sound fiscal management practices. Community members are encouraged to stay engaged throughout the biennial budget planning process by listening to the latest Talking Tacoma: Roadmap to Recovery podcast and visiting tacoma.gov/roadmaptorecovery for updates.
