EntSun News/11097516
~ Brighton, Massachusetts- The Council has adopted a resolution expressing support for a fair first contract for direct support professionals and assistant residential coordinators at MAB Community Services, represented by SEIU 509. The resolution, offered by Councilor Breadon, highlights the important role that these workers play in supporting individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence and community inclusion.
Founded in 1903, MAB Community Services is a non-profit organization that provides programs and services for people with disabilities. Headquartered in Brighton, the organization serves residents throughout Boston and across Massachusetts. According to the resolution, MAB workers assist individuals with disabilities by administering medication, providing personal care, teaching life skills, planning community outings, and offering daily support and companionship.

The resolution notes that in August 2025, MAB's direct support professionals and assistant residential coordinators voted to form a union with SEIU 509. Since then, the workers have been negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement. The resolution outlines the workers' proposals for improved wages and benefits, protections against unfair discipline, workplace respect, and protections for immigrant workers.
Despite MAB Community Services offering a 2% wage increase to its employees, the parties continue to disagree on disciplinary protections and other contract provisions. The Council expressed its support for the MAB Community Services employees represented by SEIU 509 and called on the organization to respond to workers' contract proposals without delay.
The Councilor Breadon stated that these workers deserve fair compensation for their hard work and dedication in supporting individuals with disabilities. She urged MAB Community Services to work towards reaching a fair first contract that recognizes the value of these essential workers. With this resolution passed by the Council, it is hoped that negotiations will progress towards a mutually beneficial agreement for all parties involved.
