Travel Season Turns to the Smokies as KayeDinero Turns Cherokee Into a Song

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - EntSun -- Fall travelers are turning their attention toward the North Carolina mountains.

KayeDinero is turning one of those destinations into music.

The Detroit-raised, Asheville-based artist is preparing to release "Cherokee," an instrumental named for Cherokee, North Carolina — the place she has previously described as her first meaningful destination after arriving in the state.

The release arrives as Cherokee enters one of its most visible tourism seasons.

A recent Travel + Leisure feature highlighted Cherokee as a fall destination and gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, while regional tourism forecasts say autumn color is beginning at Western North Carolina's highest elevations before moving down toward mountain communities including Cherokee and Waynesville.

A DESTINATION BECOMES A MEMORY

Before eventually settling in Asheville, KayeDinero says Cherokee was where her North Carolina story first began taking shape.

"Some places are just stops on a map, and some places stay with you," KayeDinero said. "Cherokee stayed with me."

She previously described the town as the doorway into her North Carolina chapter.

Now that memory has become an instrumental.

WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA KEEPS ENTERING THE CATALOG

"Cherokee" extends a growing series of KayeDinero releases connected to real geography.

Her catalog already includes "Appalachia," "French Broad," "Hendersonville," "Banks" and other titles rooted in Western North Carolina.

Recent visuals have taken that idea further, documenting the Blue Ridge Mountains, the French Broad River, Asheville after dark and the Harvest Moon from the air.

"I'm realizing that I'm creating a musical map without originally setting out to make one," she said. "The places become part of the story."

Cherokee sits at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and near the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, placing it at the center of Western North Carolina's fall travel landscape. For KayeDinero, however, the attraction started before the fall colors.

"Cherokee mattered to me before there was a song called Cherokee," she said. "The music came later."
