The Garden of Eden: Myth, Memory, and the Search for Paradise
EntSun News/11099314
A new exploration of ancient Mesopotamian traditions, sacred landscapes, and the enduring search for humanity's first paradise
DARWIN, Australia - EntSun -- Independent author Peta Oakes, writing as Gaelic Mac Dubhdara, announces the release of The Garden of Eden: Myth, Memory, and the Search for Paradise, a new exploration of one of humanity's most enduring sacred landscapes and the ancient Near Eastern traditions that may have contributed to its memory.
For thousands of years, the Garden of Eden has represented humanity's lost paradise: a place of abundance, sacred waters, divine presence, innocence, exile, and the mysterious beginning of human history. Yet the biblical account emerged within a much older cultural world shaped by Mesopotamian cities, rivers, creation traditions, sacred gardens, and stories concerning humanity's relationship with the divine.
Drawing upon ancient Mesopotamian mythology, biblical tradition, archaeology, historical geography, and comparative study, The Garden of Eden examines the cultural landscape surrounding the Eden narrative and the traditions that preceded and developed alongside it.

Particular attention is given to Mesopotamia and the lands surrounding the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, including Sumerian traditions associated with places such as Eridu, Ur, Uruk, and the ancient landscapes of southern Mesopotamia. The book considers themes of sacred gardens, life-giving waters, divine trees, creation, immortality, wisdom, exile, and humanity's recurring memory of a lost age of abundance.
Rather than attempting to establish a single definitive location for Eden, the book asks a broader question: whether the story preserves echoes of older Near Eastern ideas about paradise, sacred geography, and humanity's relationship with the natural and divine worlds.
Through maps, chronology, ancient texts, mythology, and historical context, Oakes follows the Eden tradition back into the cultural environment from which some of its most recognisable imagery emerged, while considering why the idea of a lost paradise has remained so powerful across generations.
