The Cadence Institute Releases New Policy Paper Asking: "Economic Growth for Whom?"

NEW YORK - EntSun -- The Cadence Institute for Policy & Society today announced the release of its new policy paper, "Economic Growth for Whom? Rethinking Economic Security in America," examining the relationship between economic growth and the lived economic security of communities across the United States.

Economic growth remains one of the most frequently cited measures of national progress. Rising gross domestic product, employment, wages, investment, and consumer activity are often presented as evidence of a strong economy. Yet aggregate economic performance does not necessarily reveal how prosperity is distributed or whether households have become more financially secure.

The new Cadence Institute paper asks a more fundamental question: When the American economy grows, who actually experiences the benefits of that growth?

The paper examines economic security through a broader lens, considering the conditions that shape whether individuals and families can translate economic growth into stability, opportunity, and long term prosperity. Particular attention is given to communities that have historically faced barriers to wealth creation and economic mobility, including low income, Black, and Indigenous communities.

Rather than treating economic growth and economic security as interchangeable concepts, the paper argues that policymakers should evaluate economic progress by examining both national economic performance and household level outcomes.

"Economic growth matters, but growth alone cannot tell us whether families are secure, whether communities are gaining wealth, or whether opportunity is becoming more broadly shared," said Edward Summers, Ph.D., Director of The Cadence Institute for Policy & Society. "If we want to understand the strength of the American economy, we have to look beyond aggregate indicators and ask what economic progress actually means in people's lives."
