Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce SNAP Replacement Benefits Extension For Texans Affected By Flooding

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the deadline for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed during the recent flooding.

According to Governor Abbott, this extension will provide much-needed assistance to families who were affected by the floods. He stated, "This deadline extension through August 3 will help put meals on the table for those in need." The extended deadline applies to SNAP recipients living in Bandera, Blanco, Frio, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Uvalde and Val Verde counties.

The request for an extension was made by HHSC and was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Administration. This will allow recipients more time to report their losses and request replacement benefits. The funds should be added to their Lone Star Cards within two business days of submitting their request.

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth expressed her commitment to helping those affected by the floods. She stated, "HHSC is committed to helping Texans affected by the devastating flooding in July." Muth also emphasized that these replacement benefits will alleviate some of the burden on families as they focus on recovering and rebuilding.

To request a benefit replacement, SNAP recipients can visit a local HHSC office or download form H1855 and mail it to Texas Health and Human Services or fax it. For those unable to visit an office due to age, disability or distance, alternative options are available.

Texans impacted by any disaster can also visit the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage for more information. Additionally, they can dial 2-1-1 and select option 1 to find local resources such as food or shelter.

This extension of the deadline is a crucial step in providing support to those affected by the recent flooding in Texas. The HHSC continues its efforts to assist those in need and encourages all eligible SNAP recipients to take advantage of this extended deadline.
