Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Three To Credit Union Commission

~ Austin, TX- Governor Greg Abbott has recently announced the appointment of Sara Oates and the reappointment of David Shurtz and Kay Rankin-Swan to the Credit Union Commission. Their terms are set to expire on February 15, 2031.

The Credit Union Commission is responsible for overseeing the Credit Union Department, which regulates all credit unions organized and chartered under the laws of Texas. These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.

Sara Oates, a resident of Austin, brings a wealth of experience to the commission. She is currently the president of Total Appraisal Management & Review and is a second-generation real estate appraiser. Oates previously served as a gubernatorial appointee to both the Appraisal Management Companies Advisory Committee and the Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board. She is also an active volunteer with Westlake Business Incubator. Oates holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from The University of Texas at Austin.

David Shurtz, hailing from Hudson Oaks, has been reappointed to the commission. He currently serves as the chief risk officer and general counsel for EECU Credit Union in Fort Worth. Shurtz is also a member of the State Bar of Texas and volunteers with organizations such as Junior Achievement and Cook Children's Radiothon. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Oklahoma and his Juris Doctor from Texas A&M University Law School (formerly known as Texas Wesleyan Law School).

Kay Rankin-Swan, who resides in Monahans, has also been reappointed to the commission. She currently serves as chief of staff for the 143rd District Attorney's Office and is a member of both Permian Chapter of Credit Unions and Cornerstone Credit Union League. Swan is also actively involved in her community as a board member for Southwest Sandhills WSC, Monahans Chamber of Commerce, Monahans Ambassadors, and Monahans Lions Club, where she also serves as treasurer. She is a former board secretary, board member, and trustee of the Monahans-Wickett-Pyote Independent School District. Swan is a graduate of the Southwest Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Management School.

These appointments demonstrate Governor Abbott's commitment to selecting highly qualified individuals to serve on the Credit Union Commission. The Senate will now have the opportunity to confirm these appointments and ensure that the commission continues to effectively regulate credit unions in Texas.
