Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Working Group To Develop Framework For Three-Year Bachelor's Degrees
EntSun News/11102681
~ In an effort to provide Texas students with a more affordable and efficient path to high-paying jobs, Governor Greg Abbott has announced the formation of a working group to develop a statewide framework for three-year bachelor's degree programs. The group, consisting of 13 members, was selected by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and includes staff and faculty leaders from four-year institutions and community colleges across the state.
According to Governor Abbott, "Texas students deserve a clear and affordable pathway to high-paying jobs." He believes that the implementation of three-year bachelor's degree programs will keep Texas at the forefront of providing accessible and high-quality education. The governor also stated that this initiative could potentially reduce the cost of earning a degree by up to 25%, saving students between $15,000-$35,000.
The working group will be responsible for developing recommendations on various aspects related to three-year bachelor's degree pathways. This includes academic standards and requirements, identifying degree programs and high-demand occupations that would benefit from these accelerated programs, assessing student demand and employer workforce needs, as well as addressing accreditation and institutional approval requirements. They will also be tasked with identifying any necessary statutory, regulatory or administrative changes needed for statewide implementation.

The group will submit their recommendations and proposed implementation framework to the Office of the Governor by December 31st, 2026. This initiative is part of Texas' broader efforts to strengthen education and workforce connections, improve student completion rates, and ensure that postsecondary credentials hold lasting value for graduates and communities in Texas.
The members of THECB's working group bring a wealth of expertise in academics, administration, accreditation, and workforce education. They include Dr. Brandon Griggs from THECB itself, as well as representatives from institutions such as Lone Star College System, Texas A&M University System, Texas State University System, Texas Southern University, University of Houston, Texas Tech University, The University of North Texas, Tyler Junior College, South Texas College, Grayson College, Texas Woman's University, and the University of Texas System.
The formation of this working group is a significant step towards providing students with more affordable and efficient options for earning a bachelor's degree. With the guidance of these expert educators, it is hoped that the recommendations put forth will lead to a more streamlined and accessible higher education system in Texas.
