Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $739,000 In Career Training Grants To Three Panhandle Area Schools

AUSTIN ~ In a move to support career and technical education (CTE) training programs in the Panhandle area, Governor Greg Abbott announced today that three schools have been awarded over $739,700 in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants. These grants, administered by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), will help the schools purchase and install equipment to train students for high-demand occupations such as emergency medical technicians and nurses.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the state's workforce, stating that "the Texas economy is booming thanks to our diverse and highly skilled workforce." He also expressed gratitude to TWC for partnering with colleges across the state to provide students with opportunities for high-paying jobs after graduation.

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel echoed this sentiment, stating that "today's JET grant awards will allow hundreds of students to train for critical healthcare occupations." He also highlighted the partnership between TWC and educational institutions as a means of supporting future job seekers and meeting local business needs.

The three JET grants were presented earlier today by TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza at a ceremony attended by state and local officials as well as school staff at the Workforce Solutions Panhandle regional office. The grants include $311,476 for Amarillo College to train 120 students as emergency medical technicians, $97,025 for Clarendon College to train 11 students as nursing assistants, and $331,298 for Frank Phillips College to train 100 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses.

Funded by the Texas Legislature every two years, JET grants are used by TWC to support career and technical education programs at public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used specifically for training students in high-demand occupations. The JET grant awards for this fiscal year have yet to be announced but will be made public in the coming months.
