Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Nearly $30 Million In Grants For Electric Reliability In The Panhandle
EntSun News/11096040
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that a significant grant of almost $30 million has been awarded to Rita Blanca Electric Cooperative, Inc. (RBEC) to enhance electric reliability for its members in the northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle. The grant, provided by the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF), will be used to fund various projects including the construction of a new substation, automation of an existing substation, transformer improvements, and upgrading wood poles to steel structures.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of providing strong and reliable energy infrastructure for all corners of the state. He stated, "Every corner of our state deserves to have a strong, reliable energy infrastructure built to serve the needs of Texans." He also expressed his belief that this grant will ensure that families and businesses in the Panhandle have access to reliable electricity.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also praised the grant and its potential impact on RBEC's members. He stated that the improvements funded by this grant will strengthen reliability for RBEC's members in their homes, businesses, farms, and ranches. He also highlighted the long-lasting nature of these improvements and their ability to support future growth in the region.

RBEC CEO/General Manager Grace Subealdea expressed gratitude for the TxEF grant and its potential to improve system reliability for their members. She stated, "Rita Blanca Electric Cooperative is grateful for the TxEF grant and the opportunity it creates to invest in system improvements that will enhance reliability and better serve our membership for years to come." She also emphasized how critical these investments are in maintaining a strong and resilient system for their members.
The project funded by this grant will benefit RBEC's service territory which includes Dallam, Hartley, Hutchinson, Moore, and Sherman Counties. The overall reliability and safety improvements will upgrade distribution equipment, improve storm response capabilities, and reduce wildfire risk. These improvements will also support the economic resilience of the region's rural agricultural community by reducing outage risks and shortening power restoration times in case of an outage.
The TxEF Outside ERCOT Grant Program, administered by the PUCT, aims to provide funding for projects that improve electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information about this program and other TxEF initiatives can be found on the PUCT's website. With this grant, RBEC and its members can look forward to a more reliable and resilient energy system that will support their needs for years to come.
