Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $8.8 Million In Grants For Electric Reliability In The South Plains
EntSun News/11095815
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant investment in the South Plains region to strengthen electric reliability for members of Lamb County Electric Cooperative, Inc. The Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) has awarded four grants totaling over $8.8 million to support various projects aimed at improving the region's electrical infrastructure.
The grants will fund several reliability projects, including the replacement of transmission lines, increasing transformer capacity, and modernizing aging infrastructure. These enhancements will not only improve the reliability of electricity for residents and businesses in Lamb and Hockley Counties but also increase the system's capacity to support future growth in the region.
Governor Abbott emphasized Texas' leadership in energy and stated that prioritizing projects that directly impact Texans' homes and businesses is crucial. He believes that these grants will ensure communities across the South Plains have reliable energy both now and in the future.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also expressed his support for these projects, stating that increasing capacity to distribute electricity and adding reliability protections is a powerful combination for the region's future.

Lamb County Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s General Manager and CEO, Blake Moore, expressed gratitude for being able to utilize the Outside of ERCOT Grant Program. He believes that this award will allow them to improve their infrastructure while keeping rates low for their members.
The resiliency projects funded by these grants will benefit nearly 2,400 co-op members in Lamb County Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s service territory. Two projects will replace a total of 13.5 miles of aging transmission lines, which will improve continuity of service and reduce required maintenance. The new lines will also decrease the risk of wildfires.
In addition to transmission line replacements, other reliability improvements include installing a new transformer at the Opdyke Substation. This upgrade will increase the facility's capacity to distribute electricity while modernizing control systems for faster response times during emergencies and quicker restoration times afterward.
The PUCT administers the TxEF Outside ERCOT Grant Program, which provides funding for projects that improve electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information on this and other TxEF programs is available on the PUCT's website. With these grants, Governor Abbott and the PUCT are working towards ensuring a more reliable and resilient energy grid for all Texans.
