Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $113 Million In Grants For Electric Reliability In The Panhandle And South Plains

EntSun News/11096127
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant investment in the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) to enhance reliability for customers of Southwestern Public Service Company (SPS) in the Texas Panhandle and South Plains regions. The $113 million grant will be used to fund various projects aimed at improving the electric distribution system and ensuring a dependable power supply for years to come.

As a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, SPS will benefit greatly from these grants, which will go towards repairing or replacing power poles, increasing protections in high-risk areas, and implementing advanced system monitoring technology. Governor Abbott expressed his confidence in the state's energy sector, stating that "Texans lead the nation in energy because we invest in dependable power in every corner of our state." He believes that this grant will not only improve infrastructure but also provide long-term benefits for families and businesses across Texas.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also praised the grant, highlighting how each project works together to create multiple layers of protection for consumers and businesses. He emphasized that this program is not limited to one aspect of the electric system but rather aims to strengthen every step of the process for Texans.

Xcel Energy - Texas Interim President Brad Baldridge echoed these sentiments, stating that this grant allows them to expand important system improvements while reducing costs for customers. He emphasized their commitment to improving grid resiliency and public safety through these investments.

The projects funded by this grant will primarily benefit customers in SPS's service territory, including those in the Panhandle and South Plains regions. One notable project is a drone-based pole inspection program that will assess over 273,000 poles in SPS's system to identify any issues and address them promptly. Additionally, pole-mounted sensors will be deployed along distribution lines to continuously monitor conditions and detect hazards in real-time.

The PUCT administers the TxEF Outside ERCOT Grant Program, which aims to improve electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information on this and other TxEF programs can be found on the PUCT's website.

With this significant investment in the Texas Energy Fund, Governor Abbott and the PUCT are demonstrating their commitment to ensuring a reliable and resilient energy supply for all Texans. These projects will not only improve infrastructure but also provide peace of mind for customers and businesses in the SPS service territory.
