Spokane: Domestic Disturbance Call Results in Serious Injury to Dog

EntSun News/11096330
~ Spokane Police responded to a disturbance at a residence on East Pacific Avenue on June 27th, 2026. According to a male caller, there was a dispute over children at the home and screaming could be heard in the background. The caller also reported that the suspect had killed a dog before leaving the location.

Upon arrival, officers found a small dachshund lying motionless in the front yard. As they interviewed those involved, it was revealed that the suspect, 36-year-old Marlitto J. Burnley, was the father of one of the children staying at the residence with their grandfather. The argument began when the child's mother asked that they remain at the location, causing Burnley to become upset.

The grandfather stated that Burnley had advanced on him during the argument and he had used pepper spray in self-defense. During this altercation, Burnley grabbed a small dog from a vehicle and slammed it forcefully into the ground, resulting in its death. He then fled before officers arrived.

After speaking with all parties involved and seeing evidence of animal cruelty, officers had probable cause to arrest Burnley. He was later located in another area and taken into custody for first-degree animal cruelty. He was then booked into Spokane County Jail.

Correction: It has been reported that earlier news stating that the dog had passed away was incorrect. The dog sustained serious injuries but did not pass away as previously stated. This information has been confirmed by Officer Daniel Strassenberg, PIO for Spokane Police Department.
