Spokane: Camp Sekani Update 7/1/26

EntSun News/11096290
~ A team from the Parks & Recreation department recently conducted an initial site visit of Camp Sekani, accompanied by Fire personnel. The purpose of the visit was to assess the damage caused by the recent fire in the area. While the trails have been significantly affected, it was noted that the disc golf area was spared from major damage.

The next step for the team is to conduct a full site visit and assess the extent of the damage, with a focus on mitigating potential hazards such as fallen trees and erosion. The trails will also be evaluated to determine what repairs are needed. Once this assessment is complete, they plan to collaborate with volunteer groups to develop a plan for reopening safely.

In the meantime, it has been announced that the west side of Beacon Hill, including Shields Park and Minnehaha Park access areas, will remain open. Due to the closure of Camp Sekani's parking lot as a result of the fire, an expanded dirt parking lot on the east side of Minnehaha Park will be opened for public use. This lot was originally built in preparation for construction work on Make Beacon Hill Public Phase II, which is expected to begin in August and should not be delayed by the fire. It is still being determined if there will be a brief opening of Camp Sekani's parking lot between its current closure and construction.

Signs have been placed at Camp Sekani to inform visitors that it remains closed until further notice. However, officials assure that it will once again be an incredible recreation space once they have restored it to safety together. For any updates or inquiries about Camp Sekani's status, individuals can contact 311 or 509-755-2489.
