Rust Project and Rust Foundation Announce First Maintainers in Residence
EntSun News/11100708
New program directs $350,000 toward maintainers supporting critical Rust infrastructure
DOVER, Del. - EntSun -- The Rust Project and Rust Foundation today announced the inaugural cohort of the Rust Maintainers in Residence (MiR) program, an initiative providing dedicated funding to maintainers working on critical Rust infrastructure. Supported through the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund (RFMF), the program represents an investment in the long-term sustainability of Rust and the people who maintain it.
The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund has raised $350,000 through contributions from Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), OpenAI, and the Rust Project Leadership Council, making it possible to fund the first cohort of Maintainers in Residence and maintainer grants. The initiative brings together the Rust Project, Rust Foundation, and funding partners to directly support the people whose work sustains the Rust programming language and ecosystem.
"The Rust Programming Language is so well loved because of the consistent efforts of the talented and tireless maintainer community, who should be supported and compensated for their dedication. That is why we created the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund," said Dr. Rebecca Rumbul, Executive Director and CEO of the Rust Foundation. "Our generous sponsors and donors recognise that maintainers perform a critical and valuable role, and I am grateful to the Rust Funding Team for running a fair and transparent process to target these funds where they will have a significant impact."

Unlike traditional grant programs, funding decisions are made by the Rust Project Funding Team, which works closely with Rust team leads, project moderators, and community advisors to identify high-impact maintenance work across the project. The program enables maintainers to dedicate focused time to improving the tooling and infrastructure relied upon by Rust developers and organizations around the world.
Inaugural Maintainers in Residence
The first cohort will focus on key areas across the Rust ecosystem, including:
Additional information about each Maintainer in Residence and their planned work is available in the Rust Project's accompanying announcement: https://blog.rust-lang.org/2026/08/26/announcing-our-first-maintainers-in-residence/

Investing in the Future of Rust
The Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund reflects a growing recognition that sustaining open source software requires investing in the people who build and maintain it—not just the code itself.
In addition to organizational support, individual contributors can support the Fund through the Rust Foundation's GitHub Sponsors program. The Rust Foundation and Rust Project aim to expand the program over time, creating additional opportunities to fund critical maintenance work and strengthen the long-term health, security, and sustainability of the Rust ecosystem.
