Richi pLGG Cure Launches to Transform Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma Care Across the Atlantic

EntSun News/11103912
The Richi Foundation, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) join forces to advance treatments and empower families.

BOSTON - EntSun -- The Richi Foundation (https://www.richifoundation.org/) is proud to announce Richi pLGG Cure (https://www.richiplggcure.org/home), a new transatlantic initiative developed in partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma Program (https://www.danafarberplga.org/), and Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) (https://www.kitz-heidelberg.de/en/research/rese...) to support children and families affected by pediatric low-grade gliomas (pLGG).

PLGGs are the most common brain tumors in children, with thousands diagnosed globally each year. Unfortunately, PLGG patients face long-term side effects from both tumor growth and the adverse impacts of the intensive therapies currently available for treatment. Designed as a global collaborative effort, Richi pLGG Cure unites the Richi Foundation's family-centered programs with world-leading pediatric oncology institutions in the United States and Europe.

Richi pLGG Cure will focus on three core areas of impact:
  • Advance — Support translational research and clinical initiatives that enable continued progress toward more effective and less toxic treatments for every child with pLGG
  • Educate — Empower families with actionable knowledge, resources, and guidance to help navigate the complex care journey associated with pLGGs
  • Support — Strengthen long-term family and community connections, including linking eligible families with Richi House and it's specialized in-person programming
"With Richi's pLGG Cure, the Richi Foundation formally unites two globally preeminent programs focused on pLGGs - linking science performed in Boston at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and in Germany at the Children's Cancer Center. We strongly believe that the fastest path to curative and non-toxic treatments is collaborative science across the world, hand-in-hand with patient families and advocates. We are on this mission together and will not stop until we can offer the chance of a cure without long-term side effects for every child diagnosed with a low-grade glioma."

Following Richi pLGG Cure's timely launch during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the initiative prepares for the "Richi pLGG Cure Social Media Challenge Week" this coming December 7-13. The week-long social media campaign will engage the global community in daily missions to raise awareness, spread hope, and support kids fighting pLGG. Supporters worldwide can participate by sharing posts with #pLGGWeek and tagging the Richi Foundation, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) .

About the Richi Foundation

The Richi Foundation is redefining how childhood cancer is tackled by driving bold innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and purpose-driven impact. Supported by committed partners such as M&T Bank, which believes strong communities are built when families have access to the health, education and essential resources they need to thrive. The Richi Foundation fulfills its mission through three core pillars: Richi House (https://www.richihouse.org/), offering free wellness, community, and holistic support to families facing childhood cancer; Richi Cure (https://www.richicure.org/), accelerating pediatric cancer drug development through strategic biotech partnerships; and Richi pLGG Cure (https://www.richiplggcure.org/home), a dedicated transatlantic initiative focused on pediatric low-grade glioma care and research.

About the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute pLGG Program

The mission of the Dana-Farber Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma (pLGG) Program (https://www.danafarberplga.org/) is to perform cutting-edge and collaborative science to find a cure for every child diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Established in 2007 by seminal support from families of their patients, the pLGG Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was the first multi-investigator program dedicated to pLGGs in the world. The program has made fundamental discoveries into what drives pLGG growth and was instrumental in the development of the first FDA-approved therapies for pLGG.

The Program brings together families, clinicians, and researchers working side-by-side to develop more effective, less toxic treatments. To this day the program remains a strong partnership between researchers and patient families, whose fundraising efforts sustain the program and research mission.

About Hopp Children's Cancer Center (KiTZ) Heidelberg pLGG program

The Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ) in Germany, brings together internationally recognized expertise in pediatric oncology, cancer biology, molecular diagnostics, and patient-centered translation. Pediatric low-grade gliomas are a major focus area at the KiTZ – with multiple groups addressing topics spanning basic research, preclinical development and clinical studies. This commitment of expertise has positioned the KiTZ as one of the leading centers for pLGG research and provides a strong foundation for collaboration with the pLGG Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Division of Pediatric Glioma Research (https://www.kitz-heidelberg.de/en/research/rese...), headed by Professor David Jones, specifically has the mission to advance the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric low-grade gliomas through closely integrating research and clinical translation. Professor Jones also heads the EVEREST Centre for Paediatric Low-Grade Brain Tumour Research, an international program across Germany and the UK that was established in 2017, funded by the Brain Tumour Charity (UK) and taking its name from the Everest in the Alps challenge.

Together, the team investigates the molecular mechanisms that drive pLGG and translate their discoveries into more precise diagnostics and more effective, less toxic treatments.
