Our Lady of the Artilects Author Andrew Gillsmith Featured in America Weekly on Catholic Storytelling and AI

New feature explores how Gillsmith's science fiction novel brings faith, suspense, and questions of human identity into the age of artificial intelligence
ST. LOUIS - EntSun -- Science fiction author Andrew Gillsmith is featured in America Weekly for making the case that Catholic writers have a place in the conversation about artificial intelligence, and that fiction can help people grapple with what makes us human.
The October 12 profile, "Why Andrew Gillsmith Believes the AI Age Needs Catholic Storytellers," centers on Gillsmith's novel, Our Lady of the Artilects, and its blend of futuristic technology, religious belief, and suspense.

"Before people argue about the future, they imagine it," Gillsmith tells America Weekly. "Science fiction has always done that."
In Our Lady of the Artilects, artificial beings begin reporting the same terrifying apocalyptic vision. The Vatican sends Fr. Gabriel Serafian, a Catholic priest and former neuroscientist, to investigate. What follows is a far-reaching mystery that asks whether an artificial mind can experience something spiritual, and what that possibility might mean for humanity.
The America Weekly article praises the book for combining "the suspense of a science fiction thriller with the intellectual ambition of a much larger philosophical mystery." It also highlights Gillsmith's approach to faith: rather than preaching to readers, he lets conflicting beliefs and difficult questions unfold through the story.
Originally self-published in 2022, Our Lady of the Artilects sold approximately 20,000 copies before being acquired for a revised edition by Logos Rising Press. The new edition features a foreword by Christopher Ruocchio, author of the Sun Eater series, and support from bestselling Catholic author Matthew Kelly. Science fiction author Ray Nayler has called the novel "a fascinating meditation on the possibilities of the posthuman soul."
