MindSite News Opens Chicago Bureau to Boost Local Mental Health Reporting
EntSun News/11027798
CHICAGO, June 11, 2024 ~ MindSite News, the nation's only news outlet dedicated to reporting on mental health, has announced the opening of a new bureau in Chicago. This expansion is made possible by the support of three major foundations: the Reva and David Logan Foundation, the Field Foundation, and the Sozosei Foundation.
Founded in 2021, MindSite News has been committed to shedding light on the mental health crisis in the United States and exploring potential solutions. With this new bureau in Chicago, they will be able to focus on specific issues facing the city and its residents.
According to MindSite News' Founding Editor Rob Waters, "The bureau will enable MindSite News to deepen our work in Chicago and build on our history of partnering with local outlets including WBEZ, Block Club Chicago and South Side Weekly."
Leading this new bureau will be Josh McGhee, MindSite News' investigative reporter who will also serve as bureau chief. McGhee will continue his reporting on the intersection of criminal justice and mental health. Additionally, Alma Campos will serve as lead writer for a project focused on mental health issues affecting Chicago's immigrant communities. This project is made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Field Foundation of Illinois.

Daniel O. Ash, president of the Field Foundation, expressed their support for MindSite News' work stating that "An important measure of community wellbeing is the physical and mental health of its residents." He added that "These are stories that must be told with authenticity, nuance and inclusion."
The Reva and David Logan Foundation has also renewed their support for MindSite News with a $55,000 grant to continue their investigative reporting in Chicago. Crystal Logan, board member of the foundation stated that "We see the effects of deteriorating mental health resources on a daily basis in Chicago" and believes deeply in MindSite's mission.
The Sozosei Foundation was one of MindSite's first supporters three years ago and has recently awarded a new $100,000 grant to the outlet. Melissa M. Beck, executive director of the foundation, expressed their commitment to supporting MindSite News and their award-winning journalists in bringing attention to the criminalization of mental illness in the nation.
With this new bureau in Chicago, MindSite News hopes to continue their important work in reporting on mental health issues and advocating for change. Their partnerships with local outlets and support from these foundations will allow them to bring a human face to these issues and highlight potential solutions for the betterment of Chicago's residents.
