Light switch from fluorescent to LED creates big savings at sports hall

Approved Electrical approached Earlsmann to assist in providing Places for People with a bespoke LED lighting solution for the Edge Leisure Centre's sports hall
HASLEMERE, U.K. - EntSun -- LED lighting is a great choice for large indoor spaces such as sports halls. It offers bright, even illumination that is ideal for playing and watching sport, while significantly reducing energy use compared to fluorescent units. With energy costs spiralling, there's never been a better time to make the switch to LED. Approved Electrical and LED specialist Earlsmann recently worked with Places for People Leisure Limited to upgrade lighting at the sports hall at the Edge Leisure Centre in Haslemere, Surrey.
Approved Electrical calls on Earlsmann's expertise in LED lighting design and supply
Approved Electrical approached Earlsmann to assist in providing Places for People with a bespoke LED lighting solution for the Edge Leisure Centre's sports hall. The key objectives of the project were to reduce running costs and improve reliability by replacing the existing fluorescent lighting units.

Meeting CIBSE sports lighting guidelines while maximising energy savings
Earlsmann's designers modelled the lighting scheme using Relux software, ensuring compliance with the requirements of CIBSE's Lighting Guide 4: Sports Lighting. The target for the scheme was to achieve lighting levels of 300 lux with 0.7 uniformity across the space. To maintain the light level, Earlsmann included 'constant lux' sensors within the solution. This enables the units to run at around 85% of their full output, enhancing energy savings and increasing the lifespan of the luminaires.
Upgrading to LED creates a better environment for enjoying sport
The new lighting design uses 32 150W high bay lights, which replace 108 original fluorescent fittings (six-foot twin units). The new LED high bays are fitted with reflectors which provide an excellent cut-off, reducing glare to improve the comfort of users while playing, coaching and watching sport. The project was unusual as the original fluorescent fittings (six-foot twin units) were installed above a net covering the entire hall. During installation the netting was taken down and disposed of as it served no current purpose. Approved Electrical and Earlsmann worked together to deliver the project with minimal disruption to users.

LED lighting provides impressive savings from day one
The annual energy use for lighting the sports hall has reduced from over 93,000 kWhr/year to just under 21,000 kWhr/year. This has enabled Places for People to benefit from a massive 72,000kWhr/year saving, providing a rapid return on investment of less than a year at current energy prices.
