DENVER ~ In a recent report released by the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS), it has been revealed that auto theft in the state has significantly decreased in the month of May. According to the data, there was a 36% decrease in auto theft statewide in 2026 compared to a 27% decrease in 2025.
Governor Polis, who has been actively working towards reducing auto thefts, expressed his satisfaction with the results. He credited law enforcement for their efforts and emphasized the importance of investing in data-driven prevention tactics. The governor also acknowledged that there is still more work to be done to further decrease crime rates and ensure public safety.
The CDPS Executive Director, Stan Hilkey, also commended the collaborative efforts of all public safety partners in achieving this significant improvement. He highlighted the negative impact of auto theft on families and its association with other crimes. Hilkey stated that this progress aligns with their mission of making Colorado a safer place and serves as an example of effective government action.

The report showed that 543 fewer vehicles were stolen in May 2026 compared to May 2025. Additionally, five out of six regions under the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority saw a decrease in auto thefts, with the Southern region experiencing the greatest decline at 42%. The Metro and Northern regions also saw significant decreases at 39% and 35%, respectively.
Out of the total 891 vehicles stolen in May 2026, 584 have been recovered, indicating a high recovery rate of 66%. This further highlights the success of prevention tactics implemented by law enforcement.
