Kansas: KC Water Named Finalist in ESRI 2025 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ~ Kansas City, Missouri - KC Water has been recognized as a finalist in the prestigious ESRI 2025 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition. Out of over 500 submissions from around the globe, the utility's StoryMap titled "Building Resilient Stormwater Infrastructure" stood out in the infrastructure category.

The StoryMap showcases Kansas City's innovative approach to managing stormwater through the use of green infrastructure technology. This approach is a part of the city's Smart Sewer program, which aims to reduce sewer overflows and protect the natural environment.

According to Deputy Director of KC Water, Andy Shively, strategic investments in green infrastructure not only help meet regulatory compliance but also benefit local communities. The Smart Sewer program, set to be completed by 2040, will install approximately 35 green infrastructure sites covering around 750 acres.

ESRI's annual StoryMaps Competition challenges individuals and organizations worldwide to tell place-based stories about their communities and innovative solutions. This year's competition, which ran from September 10 to December 12, 2025, received entries on various topics such as environmental conservation and community infrastructure. All entries shared a common focus on the connections between people, the built environment, and the natural world.

The public is invited to view all finalists and vote for their favorite entry for the People's Choice Award until March 10th.
