Opinion: Justin Calabrese Says America Doesn't Have an Entrepreneur Problem - It Has a Courage Problem
MANHATTAN, N.Y. - EntSun -- Entrepreneur, author, and business consultant Justin Calabrese believes the greatest challenge facing American entrepreneurship isn't inflation, artificial intelligence, politics, or a lack of funding—it's a growing reluctance to embrace risk, accountability, and uncertainty.
According to Calabrese, aspiring entrepreneurs have more access than ever to business education, mentorship, technology, funding opportunities, and free resources. Yet many continue waiting for the "perfect time" to launch a business, blaming outside circumstances instead of focusing on what they can control. "We don't have a shortage of entrepreneurs—we have a shortage of people willing to take responsibility for their own success," he said.
Calabrese argues that too many struggling businesses spend their energy pointing to economic conditions, competition, AI, or social media algorithms rather than examining leadership, customer experience, execution, and adaptability. While external challenges are real, he believes successful entrepreneurs distinguish themselves by responding to change instead of waiting for it to disappear.

He is also critical of what he calls the "fake entrepreneur economy" fueled by social media, where appearances often overshadow substance. According to Calabrese, entrepreneurship has become increasingly associated with luxury lifestyles, viral content, and personal branding instead of profitability, resilience, and solving real customer problems. In his view, too many people want the image of entrepreneurship without accepting the sacrifices that come with building a successful business.
Calabrese believes education also plays a role by preparing students to enter the workforce while giving comparatively little attention to creating future employers and innovators. He argues that if failure continues to be viewed as something to avoid rather than a lesson to learn from, fewer people will be willing to take the calculated risks that drive economic growth.
Rather than fearing artificial intelligence, Calabrese sees it as exposing businesses that never developed strong fundamentals. Companies that understand their customers, deliver value, and continuously adapt, he says, will continue to succeed regardless of technological change.

His message to entrepreneurs is straightforward: stop waiting. Markets will never be perfect, competition will never disappear, and certainty is never guaranteed. Success belongs to those willing to execute despite uncertainty.
