Japan: Asset Management Nation? US$15 Trillion Wealth Shift From Cash to Capital Markets

EntSun News/11105790
"Japan is no longer the deflationary, zero-rate economy that defined much of the post-bubble era, but neither has it completed the transition to a self-sustaining growth model."

NEW YORK - EntSun -- M Capital Group ("MCG") reports that Japan is undergoing a major financial transformation, as record household wealth, returning inflation, and government reforms push savings toward productive investment. Its report, "Japan – Asset Management Nation?", examines how tax reform, corporate governance changes, and institutional modernization aim to mobilize one of the world's largest pools of dormant household capital.

M Capital Group notes that Japanese household financial assets reached a record US$16 trillion+ by March 2026, yet 47.2% (US$7.13 trillion) remains in low-yield cash and deposits. The government's "Asset Management Nation" strategy, launched in 2023 and expanded in 2026 with a US$1.58 trillion domestic investment target by 2040, is gaining traction: Nippon Individual Savings Account ("NISA") accounts exceed 28 million with roughly US$449 billion in cumulative purchases; spring wage gains have topped 5% for a third straight year; real wages turned positive in 2026 after four years of decline; and the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate above 1.0%, the highest in about three decades. The report cautions, however, that most NISA flows have gone into secondary-market shares and funds rather than directly financing corporate growth, while bank lending and a narrow investment-grade bond market remain the main corporate funding channels.

M Capital Group also notes accelerating governance reform and foreign investor interest: shareholder activism now involves 246 Japanese companies, Tokyo ranks 10th in the Global Financial Centres Index, and foreign investors bought a net US$70 billion of Japanese equities in H1 2026, nearly five times the prior-year pace. Broader drivers include state-backed semiconductor investment through Rapidus and TSMC, robotics expansion to offset demographic decline, a record 42.7 million international visitors in 2025, and rising foreign investment in Japanese real estate and AI data centers.

Yi Wu of M Capital Group noted: "Japan is undertaking one of the most ambitious wealth-mobilization efforts among advanced economies. The reforms are gaining traction, but with nearly half of household wealth still held in cash, the next several years will determine whether this becomes a lasting structural shift."
