Is Air Conditioning About to Become Normal in UK Homes?

Britain Is Heating Up! Is Air Conditioning About to Become the New Boiler?
MILTON KEYNES, U.K. - EntSun -- For decades, air conditioning in a British home was something associated with Florida, Spain or expensive hotels. In the UK, we simply opened a window and complained about the weather. But that attitude could be about to change.
As the climate warms and periods of extreme summer heat become more noticeable, the question facing homeowners may no longer be whether they need air conditioning, but when they will need it.
British houses were traditionally designed to retain heat rather than remove it. That makes perfect sense when keeping warm is the priority. But what happens when the problem is keeping a bedroom comfortable at 11pm after a scorching day?
There is also a common misconception that air conditioning is prohibitively expensive to run. Modern inverter air-conditioning systems work differently from the old fashioned idea of a unit simply running flat out all day. Once a room reaches its target temperature, an inverter system can reduce the compressor's output and only provide the cooling needed to maintain that temperature. The actual electricity cost therefore depends on the system, room, temperature and how it is used, but efficient modern systems can be surprisingly economical once they are maintaining a settled temperature.

For homeowners who only need occasional cooling, portable air conditioners are an accessible starting point, with units available for around £400. However, there is another option for people who want something quieter, more efficient and permanently installed.
A properly installed system capable of cooling both an upstairs room and a downstairs living area can cost from around £1,900, depending on the property and installation requirements.
That puts the decision into an interesting perspective. Spending thousands on a cooling system might once have seemed unnecessary in Britain. But if hotter summers become increasingly normal, air conditioning could eventually be viewed in much the same way as central heating: not a luxury, but simply another part of making a home comfortable.
Barrett Plumbing is already seeing the conversation around home heating and cooling changing. The British home of the future may need to do something it has rarely needed to do before - keep people cool as well as warm.
Perhaps the strangest thing about British air conditioning is that, in a few years, not having it could seem stranger than having it.
