Historic Abington Park Estate Comes to Market for Its Next Chapter

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - EntSun -- KANSAS CITY — Abington Park Estate, the grand 1910 residence at 140 Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City's Historic Northeast, is preparing to enter the market. The five-bedroom, four-bath home contains approximately 4,300 square feet on a 0.32-acre corner property, showcased by listing agent Linda Hueffmeier of Compass Realty Group.

The home's defining feature is its broad wraparound porch constructed with substantial stone walls and pillars. Inside, original leaded-glass windows, woodwork, built-in bookcases, box-beam ceilings, and a masonry fireplace remain perfectly intact. The property also includes a detached stone carriage house and views of the historic Masonic Temple, churches, and fountain directly across the boulevard.

The Northeast Kansas City Historical Society documented the house in a then-and-now as the James Homer Knapp Residence, along with its modern name, Abington Park Estate, in Volume II of Kansas City's Historic Northeast Neighborhoods, published 2018. The society later selected the property to headline its 2019 Historic Fall Homes Tour. Visitors were invited inside to see its original craftsmanship.

"This house has been lovingly cared for, and is a crown jewel of Van Brunt Boulevard," said Kent Dicus, Chairman of the Northeast Kansas City Historical Society. "Visitors will never regret taking the time to visit this amazing historic home."

The house was constructed soon after lots were advertised in 1910 in the Abington Park No. 2 subdivision and built on three neighboring parcels. The original owners, James Homer Knapp and his wife, Laura Lee Lane Knapp, were living in the house by 1911. Knapp operated J.H. Knapp Construction Company, which was contracted for the erection of the New York Life Building, completed in 1889 as Kansas City's first skyscraper.

The residence began as 122 Abington Boulevard, became 122 Van Brunt Boulevard after the street was renamed in 1914 for Kansas City architect and city planner Adriance Van Brunt, and received its present address, 140 Van Brunt Boulevard, around 1941.

The stone carriage house was new when voters entered it as a polling location during the 1952 presidential primary that would send Dwight D. Eisenhower to the White House.

Author Skaught Anthony Patterson wrote most of his gothic horror novel The Odd Fellows Home at Abington Park Estate. During his ownership, he created a library room and added a speakeasy-style bar, complete with cabaret stage in the basement.

"This place really is endlessly inspiring," Patterson said. "This home's character wanders through the halls into every room."

Abington Park Estate will host an open house during the NEKCHS Fall Homes Tour October 24. Listing price and date will be announced through Compass Realty Group.
