Governor Polis Takes Executive Action to Protect and Support Colorado Pollinators
EntSun News/11102691
DENVER ~ In a press conference held at the Denver Zoo, Governor Jared Polis announced a new executive order aimed at protecting and supporting pollinators in Colorado. The event took place in front of a vibrant pollinator garden, highlighting the importance of these creatures in the state's natural beauty and agricultural industry.
Governor Polis emphasized the crucial role that pollinators play in Colorado's ecosystem, stating that "pollinators help grow everything we love in Colorado." From the peach groves and corn fields on the Western Slope to the wildflowers in Crested Butte, these creatures are essential for both agriculture and outdoor recreation.
The executive order directs various state agencies to take action to protect pollinators. This includes creating a statewide pollinator strategy to improve long-term conservation efforts, prioritizing the use of pollinator-friendly pesticides on state lands, and supporting local governments and private landowners in their efforts to protect and plant pollinator habitats.

One significant aspect of the executive order is its focus on expanding pollinator habitat within the state highway system right-of-way. This will not only benefit pollinators but also enhance the beauty of Colorado's highways for residents and visitors alike.
This latest action builds upon Governor Polis's previous efforts to protect pollinators. In 2024, he unveiled the Colorado Native Pollinating Insects Health Study, which provided valuable insights into the health of these creatures in the state. The report called for immediate actions to protect at-risk pollinators, restore their habitats, reduce pesticide risk, and monitor their health.
Since then, Colorado has taken steps towards implementing these strategies. One notable initiative is the Invertebrate and Rare Plant Initiative launched by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
As Governor Polis signed the executive order surrounded by colorful butterflies fluttering around flowers at the zoo's garden, it was clear that this was a significant step towards protecting Colorado's vital pollinators. With this action, the state is taking a proactive approach to ensure the continued health and well-being of these essential creatures for years to come.
