Governor Polis Signs Bills Into Law Breaking Down Barriers to Install Solar Panels; Boosting Construction Businesses in Colorado and Cracking Down on Copper Wire Theft
EntSun News/11091615
DENVER ~ Denver - In a move to promote clean energy and save money for Colorado residents, Governor Jared Polis signed two new bills into law today. The first, HB26-1007, also known as the Improve Customer Use Distributed Energy Resources Act, was sponsored by Representatives Lesley Smith and Rebekah Stewart, as well as Senators Cathy Kipp and Matt Ball. This law aims to cut through red tape and make it easier for homeowners and renters to utilize solar energy.
Governor Polis expressed his enthusiasm for the new law, stating that it will break down barriers to clean energy and provide more options for Coloradans to save money on their energy bills. He emphasized that just because someone lives in an apartment or multi-family building does not mean they should be excluded from using solar panels.
The Colorado Energy Office Executive Director Will Toor also praised the new law, stating that it will expand consumer choice and make solar technology more accessible and affordable. He believes that widespread adoption of smaller solar energy systems, especially when paired with battery storage, will not only save people money but also improve grid reliability at peak times.

In addition to the Improve Customer Use Distributed Energy Resources Act, Governor Polis also signed HB26-1311 - Retainage Surety Bond Construction Contracts. This bill was sponsored by Representatives Majority Leader Monica Duran and Michael Carter, as well as Senators Scott Bright and Marc Snyder. The aim of this law is to protect Colorado construction businesses' time and money.
Governor Polis stressed the importance of this bill in providing more affordable housing options for Coloradans near job centers, transit, and schools. He believes that by cutting through red tape for businesses, more companies can expand and create housing options that are within reach for residents.
The third bill signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1101 - Criminal Offenses Related to Critical Infrastructure Metals. This legislation was sponsored by Representatives Cecelia Espenoza and Matt Soper, as well as Senators William Lindstedt and Byron Pelton. The new law aims to prevent and deter individuals from selling stolen metal.
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of protecting Colorado's infrastructure and keeping communities safe. He stated that by signing this bill into law, the state is cracking down on crime and preventing copper wire theft. He thanked the sponsors for their work in protecting Colorado and stopping crime.
These three bills are a part of Governor Polis' efforts to promote clean energy, support businesses, and protect the state's infrastructure. With these new laws in place, Colorado is taking a step towards a more sustainable future while also ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
