Governor Polis Announces that the Mosco Pueblo Chile Will Be on Colorado's 2028 American Innovation Coin
EntSun News/11102782
DENVER ~ In a press conference held today, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado announced his nomination of the Pueblo Chile to be featured on the state's 2028 American Innovation Coin. This initiative, led by the United States Mint, aims to honor American innovation and innovators by issuing $1 coins for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories.
The Pueblo Chile was chosen as it represents Colorado's rich history, heritage, and strong agricultural roots. According to Governor Polis, it is "simply the very best chile that exists" and a key ingredient in many delicious dishes across the state and country. The flavorful modern Pueblo chile, also known as the Mosco variety, was developed in 1994 through selective plant breeding by Dr. Mike Bartolo.
Dr. Bartolo is a vegetable crop specialist with Colorado State University and comes from a long line of farmers in the Pueblo area. He and his team at the Arkansas Valley Research Center have worked tirelessly to perfect this unique strain of chile that has become a staple in Colorado cuisine.
The Governor emphasized that this nomination not only recognizes agricultural innovation but also pays tribute to the culture and history of generations of Coloradans before us. He believes that featuring the Pueblo Chile on a national coin will showcase its importance in Colorado's past, present, and future.

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts reviewed Colorado's nominated designs this morning and voted CO-01 as their preference. The final design will be selected by Secretary of Treasury after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee in early October.
Chiles have been grown in Colorado since at least the early 1800s due to its warm summers and low rainfall - ideal conditions for growing chile peppers. Over time, a unique local variety began to develop through natural selection and basic horticulture by farmers in the Pueblo area. This led to the birth of the first Pueblo green chiles, with the Mosco variety becoming the most popular strain in recent years.
The Governor's announcement comes just before the 32nd Annual Pueblo Chile and Frijoles Festival, which will take place from September 18-20th in Downtown Pueblo. This festival celebrates southern Colorado and is a favorite event for Governor Polis to pick up fresh Pueblo Chiles for his own dishes, including salsa, omelets, and even peanut butter, banana, honey, and Pueblo Chile sandwiches.
With this nomination, the Pueblo Chile will soon be seen by all Americans on pocket change and collector's books. It is a testament to Colorado's agricultural innovation and a proud representation of the state's culture and heritage.
