Governor Newsom proclaims California POW/MIA Recognition Day

~ Sacramento, CA - On September 18, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom declared the day as "California POW/MIA Recognition Day" in honor of the brave service members who have gone missing while defending our country.

The proclamation was issued to remember and honor the more than 80,000 American service personnel who remain missing from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars, Gulf wars, and the war in Afghanistan. Some of these individuals were prisoners of war who were taken captive and never returned home, while others are still missing in action.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of keeping their memory alive and continuing to search for answers for their loved ones. He commended the efforts of the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency for their dedication and diligence in seeking answers. The agency has identified and accounted for 1,277 American service members since 2019, with 223 being accounted for in 2026 alone.

The establishment of POW/MIA Recognition Day in 1979 was a result of the activism of families of missing Vietnam War service members. It serves as a solemn reminder of our country's duty to remember and honor those who have made sacrifices while serving our nation.

To show support for these brave individuals and their families, Governor Newsom called for the display of the POW/MIA flag at government buildings, businesses, and homes throughout California. He reaffirmed the promise that these service members are not forgotten.

In his executive order issued on September 18th as well, Governor Newsom addressed recent incidents involving artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The order aims to accelerate California's new law that establishes an AI framework and calls for national adoption.

Additionally, on September 17th, Governor Newsom announced appointments to various positions within his administration. Holly Pearson was appointed as Chief Counsel at the California Department of Technology.

Concluding his proclamations for this week, Governor Newsom also declared September 17th as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day." He emphasized the importance of the United States' founding document and the significance of being a citizen of this country.
