Governor DeSantis Celebrates Florida's History of Communism Standards
EntSun News/11102116
MIAMI, Fla. ~ MIAMI, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the implementation of Florida's History of Communism standards, making it the most comprehensive in the nation. This move solidifies Florida's position as a leader in civic and historical education, ensuring that students gain a thorough understanding of the consequences of communist ideology.
The new standards aim to educate students on the erosion of individual rights, concentration of government power, and human suffering caused by communism. By providing a deeper understanding of these issues, Florida hopes to foster a stronger appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities afforded by America's Constitutional Republic.
Governor DeSantis stated, "As the new school year begins, Florida's new History of Communism education standards will ensure that students receive comprehensive instruction on the historical reality of communism." He went on to say that thanks to legislation he signed, all high school students are now required to learn about the damage caused by this ideology and the experiences of those who suffered under communist regimes.
Commissioner of Education Henry Mack also praised Governor DeSantis for his efforts in ensuring that Florida students learn about one of history's most devastating ideologies. He stated, "By studying the atrocities committed under communist regimes, students gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of concentrated government power and the loss of individual liberty." Mack emphasized that this knowledge is crucial in preserving liberty and strengthening civic responsibility.

In 2022, Governor DeSantis signed House Bill 395, which created Victims of Communism Day and required schools to provide at least 45 minutes of instruction on the history of communist regimes. This was followed by Senate Bill 1264 in 2024, which expanded this requirement to ensure a more comprehensive understanding among students.
Continuing their efforts towards civic and historical education, Florida's State Board of Education approved new History of Communism standards in November 2025. These standards were revised to include recent events such as Raúl Castro's indictment and the collapse of the Maduro regime in Venezuela. This addition provides students with relevant, real-world examples of the ongoing atrocities committed by communist governments.
The History of Communism standards further strengthen Florida's nationally recognized social studies curriculum by providing students with a deeper understanding of the origins, consequences, and global effects of communism. With these standards in place, Florida continues to set the national benchmark for civic and historical education. Governor DeSantis and his administration are committed to ensuring that the next generation understands the truth about communism and is less susceptible to its false promises.
