~ Governor Greg Abbott, accompanied by a group of students and business leaders, visited the TEL Texas Technical Training and Research & Development Center in Austin today. The purpose of the visit was to showcase how industry-led training programs are equipping thousands of Texans with the necessary skills for high-demand careers, while also solidifying Texas' position as a leader in the semiconductor industry.

During a roundtable discussion, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of Texas' role in the semiconductor industry, stating that "Texas ranks number one in the United States for semiconductors, and we rank number one in the U.S. for workforce training." He stressed the need for Texas to continue leading the way not only in manufacturing semiconductors but also in providing skilled technicians to work on them.

The Governor specifically highlighted TEL's contribution to this effort, noting their role in producing qualified technicians and researchers to strengthen the workforce and maintain Texas' competitive edge. With over 51,000 semiconductor workers currently employed in Texas, representing a 21% increase over the past five years, TEL's Austin center is expected to train approximately 2,200 individuals each year. TEL has been operating in Texas for over 30 years and is headquartered in Austin. In 2023, Governor Abbott signed into law the Texas CHIPS Act which established the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF). This legislation aims to ensure that Texas remains at the forefront of research, design, and manufacturing of microchips. As part of this initiative, TEL was awarded a TSIF grant worth more than $3 million for their Austin center. With an additional investment of over $30 million from TEL itself, this project will expand domestic workforce capabilities for designing and manufacturing chips within America.
