Following Budget Reductions, New Hours and Donation for the Juneau-Douglas City Museum

EntSun News/11096442
Beginning Friday, July 10, the Juneau ~ Juneau-Douglas City Museum Adjusts Hours and Receives Generous Donation

Starting this Friday, July 10, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will be operating on new hours. The museum will now be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This change in schedule was necessary due to the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Assembly's decision to reduce the museum's funding by two positions. This decision was made in response to declining municipal revenue.

Since the adoption of the fiscal year 2027 municipal budget, the City Manager's Office, Juneau Public Libraries Director, and museum staff have been working diligently to support the museum's transition. However, this transition has not been without its challenges.

In light of these challenges, Mayor Beth Weldon reached out for support and received a generous donation from Norwegian Cruise Line. The one-time, non-expiring donation of $45,000 will go towards funding seasonal museum attendants. This role has been crucial in keeping the museum open during summers in the past.

The community can expect some changes in operating hours for the upcoming Independence Day holiday. Like other city facilities, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will be closed from Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5. However, after the holiday weekend, there will be a free author talk with Patrick Bringley on Friday, July 10 at UAS Egan Lecture Hall that is open to the public.

The CBJ is grateful for the community's patience and willingness to support the museum during this transition period. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum has an active volunteer base and anyone interested in lending their support can contact Catherine Melville at [insert contact information].
