EFA Announces 2024 Editorial Rate Chart
EntSun News/11019818
The Editorial Freelancers Association Releases Updated Data from New Rate Survey
NEW YORK - EntSun -- The Editorial Freelancers Association is pleased to announce the release of the 2024 EFA rate chart. Based on an extensive survey of the organization's members conducted in the last quarter of 2023 and first two weeks of 2024, this revamped chart marks the first time this information has been updated since 2020.
"We received terrific member response to the survey," said Mark Schaefer, EFA membership coordinator and principal architect of the survey. "And after spending months reviewing, analyzing, and formatting the mountains of data we received, we are thrilled to have the new chart go live."
Along with the Member Directory and Job List submission form, the rate chart is one of the most visited pages on the EFA website and is widely used as a reference point by EFA members and other freelancers, clients seeking editorial services, and professionals throughout the publishing industry.
The 2023 rate survey was far more expansive than those conducted in the past, with more than 1,200 data points queried. EFA members were offered 40 different genre and work-type options to enter their rates for, with more than twice the number of subgenres than in the previous survey. These included graphic novels, memoirs, and a finer breakdown of academic editing specialties.
"The survey was purposely designed to be responsive to our members' individual experiences and professional needs," said Cody Sisco, EFA Board of Governors co-executive. "We really tried to pull out more granular details to give a nuanced picture of how our members navigate pricing their services."

Instead of using pre-set ranges, the revised survey invited respondents to report their actual rates, which resulted in a much more accurate representation of those rates in the chart. Another update in the new chart is that per-word rates are formatted in cents (¢) rather than decimal values for easier reading and comprehension.
One of the most exciting additions to the EFA's updated Editorial Rates webpage is the rate estimator, which allows those seeking freelance services to enter information about their specific project and receive estimated price ranges. Rates can be calculated on a per-word or per-hour basis, and an editorial professional's years of experience and professional training can also be factored in.
"This is a significant innovation that allows users to interact with our rate survey data in ways that were not previously possible," said Mia Lipsit, EFA marketing and membership manager. "We hope this tool will provide clients with reliable cost estimates and a better overall understanding of the range of rates our members charge."
You can view the 2024 EFA rate chart on the Editorial Rates page of the organization's website, where you can also download a PDF version. Rates are presented according to type of work, subdivided into genres or categories and broken down into several different rate types, such as per word, per hour, or flat fee. Expected rates of production for various services are included as well. A convenient rate convertor tool is also available, enabling users to convert prices to different rate types—per hour, per page, or per word.

"We are very grateful to all our members who participated in the recent rate survey and provided us with the accurate, up-to-date information needed to make this project possible," says Katy Grenfell, EFA Board of Governors co-executive. "We hope these new tools will benefit EFA members, clients and editorial professionals at large!"
The EFA emphasizes that the rates indicated in the rate chart are for guidance only and are not mandated or recommended rates. Individual members' fees may vary considerably, depending on multiple factors such as experience and scope of work, and across fields and genres.
Founded in 1970, the Editorial Freelancers Association is an international nonprofit professional organization with more than 3,000 members, including writers, editors, copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, translators and others who work in publishing, communications and related fields.
The EFA has garnered praise from publishing pros like Jane Friedman and Louise Harnby, and is frequently listed as a valuable resource for authors on sites including Flatpage, BookBub, Publishers Weekly, Poynter, AMWA (the American Medical Writers Association), and the Chicago Manual of Style blog.
