East Texas Data Center Withdraws After Falling Short Of Governor Abbott's Standards

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that Diode, a data center company, has decided to withdraw their proposal for a new facility near Cedar Creek Lake in Henderson County. The decision was made after Diode determined that the project did not align with the Governor's directives and community expectations.

According to Governor Abbott, Texas has set a clear standard for data centers looking to do business in the state. He stated that companies must prioritize the well-being of communities, protect natural resources and the power grid, and respect the quality of life of residents. In this case, Diode made the right decision by withdrawing their project. The Governor also expects other data center developments to follow suit if they are unable to meet these standards.

The expectations set by Governor Abbott were outlined in a directive issued on June 10th to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas (ERCOT). These expectations include ensuring that data centers' interconnections result in reduced residential electrical bills, requiring them to cover all electric infrastructure costs to avoid burdening residential ratepayers, and adding to Texas' electric capacity rather than just its demand.

Additionally, new data centers will be required to use water-efficient technologies such as closed-loop cooling systems to conserve local water resources. They must also implement best practices like setbacks from neighborhoods and noise-reduction technology to minimize impacts on local communities.

Governor Abbott plans to seek legislation that will codify these expectations and also require large data centers to report their electricity and water usage data annually to the PUC. He also intends to repeal sales tax exemptions and other outdated or unnecessary incentives for data centers.

The Governor remains committed to promoting policies that ensure the growth of data centers does not come at the expense of Texas families or rural communities. With this latest development, it is evident that Texas is dedicated to responsible and sustainable growth in its technology sector.
