Cryolab Publishes Technical Guide to Vacuum Insulated Cryogenic Storage Tanks

The guide begins from a point frequently misunderstood by purchasers: there is no insulating material within the wall of a vacuum insulated vessel. The annular space between the inner and outer vessels is evacuated and sealed, and it is this vacuum that constitutes the insulation.

Heat reaches the contents by conduction, convection and radiation. Evacuating the annulus largely eliminates convection, since that mechanism requires a gas to act as a medium. The guide notes the operational consequence: a vessel that loses its vacuum does not degrade gradually, because a transport path the design had removed has been reinstated.

Radiation is addressed by multilayer insulation, comprising alternating layers of reflective film and low conductivity spacer, with the spacers preventing contact between reflective layers that would otherwise form a conduction bridge. Larger bulk tanks commonly use perlite under vacuum, which the guide notes is not field serviceable in the same manner.

A substantial section addresses the getter, a chemically active material fitted within the annulus to absorb stray gas molecules. The guide explains that sealed vacuums degrade over time because annulus materials outgas and because hydrogen and helium migrate through steel, and that the getter has a finite capacity. Saturation of the getter causes annulus pressure to rise and thermal performance to decline without any visible fault occurring, which the guide identifies as the principal reason vacuum insulated vessels have a service life rather than lasting indefinitely.

On procurement, the guide recommends comparing vessels on static evaporation rate, also known as normal evaporation rate, rather than on headline capacity, noting that a larger vessel with a poor rate can cost more to run than a smaller vessel with a good one. It also cautions that manufacturer figures represent laboratory baselines measured on closed, undisturbed vessels, and that real consumption is always higher because access events introduce heat the measurement excludes.

The guide sets out the indicators of vacuum loss, including frost or condensation appearing on a previously dry outer shell, cold spots on surfaces that should be at room temperature, consumption rising over months at unchanged workload, and changed behaviour following mechanical shock. It advises that a degrading vacuum does not recover and that contents should be transferred and the vessel withdrawn from service.
