Cryolab Publishes Dry Shipper Guidance on Hire, Purchase and IATA Classification

WEST SUSSEX, U.K. - EntSun -- Cryolab Ltd has published guidance for laboratories and clinics deciding whether to own or hire a vapour phase dry shipper, covering the commercial decision alongside the regulatory and operational detail that determines whether a cryogenic shipment succeeds.

The guidance addresses a distinction the article states is constantly conflated, including across supplier literature. A dry shipper travels as not restricted under Special Provision A152 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, provided the packaging cannot build pressure or release nitrogen in any orientation and the air waybill carries the words not restricted together with the special provision number. On the commercial decision, the guidance sets out four indications for hire: infrequent shipments, one off capacity requirements, capital expenditure constraints where moving cost into the shipment is easier to approve and to recharge, and peak cover alongside an owned baseline. It sets out three for purchase: shipment frequency, control over vessel condition and history, and readiness, noting that a hired unit places reliance on a third party inspection regime and that a shipper which has sustained mechanical shock may carry a degrading vacuum without external indication.

The article also addresses hold time, stating that published figures are measured upright, unopened and at moderate ambient temperature, and should be read as an upper bound rather than a planning figure. A hold time quoted without its measurement conditions, it states, is not usable for planning.

On charging, described as the point at which shipments most often fail, the guidance specifies full saturation of the absorbent matrix, inversion and draining so that no free liquid remains, and weighing the unit before and after charging, since weight is the only practical measure of cold mass present. It cites BCGA Code of Practice 30, on the safe use of liquid nitrogen dewars, which records that asphyxia due to oxygen deficiency is often rapid with no prior warning to the victim.
