Craftsmen Industries Introduces Capsule Care to Alleviate Healthcare Facility Gaps and Augmentation Needs
EntSun News/10888564
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - EntSun -- Craftsmen Industries developed Capsule Care, a brand of mobile hospital trailers, for public and private institutions to activate nationwide as a tool to address gaps in the American healthcare system.
Capsule Care hospital trailers can be configured as individual clinics or a multiple unit field hospital. Bed capacity for COVID-19 or non-COVID-19 patients increases with operation as a quarantine space separate from a main facility or housing for sub-acute care overflow. Future applications include response to natural disasters, future pandemics, and other events that require quickly built facilities. Uses between crises include blood donation centers, temporary clinics during facility renovations, facilities services units, and general care clinics in low-income or isolated areas for under-served populations.
Production time of a new brick-and-mortar build often takes more than 12 months for permit to build. A complete Capsule Care hospital trailer can be completed in 16 weeks at Craftsmen's facility. Full onsite setup time including plumbing, HVAC, and power is one to three days. Timing can depend upon number of units and site preparations made in advance. The modular units move from site to site as needed.
"The COVID-19 pandemic really highlighted the need for additional medical facilities. Emergencies do not allow us the time it takes to build new hospitals from the ground up," Mark Steele, Craftsmen Industries CEO and Co-Owner said. "This sparked our drive to create a fully-functional hospital that mobilizes rapidly in any location and is versatile enough to be used long-term. We used our industry knowledge and that of Gensler, a medical facilities expert, to view all angles, so that our final product was all-inclusive in meeting the needs of logistic experts, healthcare workers, and patients."

The design was created in collaboration with the architecture, design, and planning firm, Gensler serving as product design consultant. The firm's expertise in the creation of healthcare facilities added full circle perspective combined with Craftsmen's experience in mobile unit customization. A full team of engineers, healthcare leaders, and interior designers invested into Capsule Care to create an essential medical solution with a high-end patient experience.
"In our design collaboration with Craftsmen Industries, the Gensler team leveraged our breadth of healthcare and product design experience to create a mobile healthcare unit. Capsule Care was designed for quick deployment and maximum flexibility, while still giving healthcare providers the space they need to expertly care for patients in a variety of situations," Brandon Larcom, Director of Product Development at Gensler said. "We are thrilled to count it among our many collaborations as part of Gensler's product design practice with innovative thinking that enhances the human experience."
A Capsule Care mobile hospital is built with a standard tractor trailer chassis. The trailer is modified to include two expandable sections that open onsite to provide nearly 1,000 square feet of interior space in each unit. Each unit can provide six patient rooms, one restroom, one nurse's station, and two entry and exit points. The interior is climate-controlled with a system that filters in new air without recirculation.
