Colorado: Polis Administration Awards $13.9 Million for Industrial Pollution Reduction Efforts

EntSun News/11105881
Statewide ~ The Colorado Energy Office announced $13.9 million in awards Wednesday for six industrial emissions-reduction projects and one study, saying the initiatives are expected to cut annual emissions by an amount equivalent to removing 14,507 gasoline-powered cars from state roads.

The awards were made through the Clean Air Program grant and the Colorado Industrial Tax Credit Offering. The latest round brings the state's investment in industrial emissions-reduction initiatives to more than $73 million since 2023, the office said.

The Clean Air Program awarded $2.8 million to two technology providers, which will seek locations to implement their projects. Grand Valley Instrumentation received $101,400 for methane-detection technology intended to reduce landfill emissions. Vycarb received $2.7 million for carbon-management technology aimed at reducing emissions from wastewater treatment.

The tax-credit program awarded $11.1 million for five projects. TPSR Solar 16 LLC received about $1.1 million to install a grid-connected battery storage system at an industrial manufacturing plant in Weld County. The system is intended to provide backup power and reduce peak-demand charges, while demonstrating an alternative to a fossil-fuel generator.

Other awards include $360,627 for Longmont-based Underground Manufacturing, doing business as Vertpack, to install a high-efficiency printer; $8 million for Charm Industrial to install a pyrolysis facility in Fort Lupton; and nearly $700,000 for New Belgium Brewing Company to replace an aging refrigeration system at its Fort Collins brewery.

Origen Carbon Solutions received $1 million for an engineering study of a proposed zero-emission lime facility in Windsor. The study is intended to refine the facility's design and cost estimates and prepare for possible construction.

Several projects are in Colorado's ozone nonattainment area, according to the office. The awards support a range of approaches, including methane detection, carbon management and battery storage.

"Protecting our environment means investing in data-driven strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement, citing carbon management and methane detection as examples of technologies that could reduce pollution.

CEO Executive Director Will Toor said industrial and manufacturing operations are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution in Colorado. He said the initiatives would support the state's climate goals and cleaner air.

The office said it opened applications for another Clean Air Program funding round on Oct. 20. The next tax-credit application cycle is scheduled to open Nov. 1.
