DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a groundbreaking move, Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera and the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs (CCIA) have announced the release of the Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native Affairs Roadmap. This comprehensive document serves as a crucial step towards honoring Tribal sovereignty, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that Tribal Nations and AI/AN communities have a significant role in shaping Colorado state practices.
The Roadmap, which is the first of its kind for the State of Colorado, highlights the prioritization of Tribal and AI/AN relations. It represents a collaborative effort between state officials, Tribal leaders, community members, and partners to create a future where all communities can thrive.
According to Lt. Governor Primavera, "Colorado's relationship with Tribal Nations and American Indian and Alaska Native communities must be grounded in respect, partnership, and a willingness to listen and learn." She further stated that the Roadmap reflects the voices, experiences, and priorities shared through Tribal consultation and community engagement. She expressed her gratitude to all those who helped shape this vision and looks forward to turning these recommendations into meaningful action for generations to come.

CCIA Executive Director Kathryn Redhorse echoed Lt. Governor Primavera's sentiments by emphasizing the importance of strong government-to-government relationships built on trust, consistency, and genuine commitment to partnership. She also expressed her deep appreciation for the time, expertise, and guidance provided by Tribal leaders and community members throughout this process.
The Roadmap was directly informed through Tribal consultations and AI/AN community listening sessions held across Colorado. It outlines recommendations to strengthen government-to-government relationships with federally recognized Tribes while enhancing engagement with American Indian and Alaska Native communities across the state.
This coordinated approach reflects Colorado's ongoing commitment to honoring federally recognized Tribes, elevating Indigenous voices, and ensuring that state policies are informed by the needs and priorities of Tribal and AI/AN communities. The ultimate goal is to create lasting, measurable progress that benefits current and future generations.
The Roadmap is now available on the CCIA website for public access. It serves as a crucial foundation for the work ahead, and state officials remain committed to ensuring that these relationships continue to grow through sustained collaboration, accountability, and action.
