City of Spokane Launches 'Emergency Streets' Pilot Program
EntSun News/11102134
~ Spokane, WA - The City of Spokane has announced the launch of its new Emergency Streets pilot program, aimed at improving traffic safety through a rapid-response approach. This initiative, led by the Division of Transportation & Sustainability in collaboration with multiple city departments and community partners, will install temporary traffic-calming measures within 48-72 hours after a fatal crash.
According to Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city, these temporary measures are designed to reduce vehicle speeds and increase driver awareness. They may include highly visible traffic cones, pink Emergency Streets signs, and speed feedback signs. The installations will remain in place for approximately two weeks while staff monitor traffic conditions, collect speed data, and gather community feedback.
While nothing can undo the loss experienced by families and friends after a fatal crash, the Emergency Streets program aims to encourage safer driving behaviors during the critical period immediately following such an incident. It also allows the city to evaluate longer-term safety improvements and conduct community outreach and education on street safety.

The program is based on research that shows speed as one of the most significant factors influencing the severity of traffic crashes. Even small reductions in vehicle speeds can greatly decrease the likelihood of death or serious injury. By combining engineering, education, and community engagement, Emergency Streets hopes to promote a culture of shared responsibility for roadway safety.
Jon Snyder, Director of Transportation & Sustainability for Spokane, explains that while society is good at responding to crashes and returning streets to normalcy, there is often a missed opportunity to inform the public about their prevalence. He states that "the goal of Emergency Streets is to get folks to slow down and understand how safety is a shared responsibility," while also working towards improving design and implementing other strategies to prevent fatal crashes.
Funding for this pilot program comes from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission Speed Management Advisory Cooperative and the Cooper Jones Active Transportation Safety Council. Additional support is provided by the Spokane Regional Health District and other partners.
Residents are encouraged to learn more about the program, follow deployment updates, and provide feedback by visiting the city's website at https://my.spokanecity.org/streets/emergency-st.... The City of Spokane remains committed to reducing traffic fatalities through a proactive, data-informed approach in line with its Vision Zero goals and Complete Streets policies.
