City of Mesa Receives Major DUI Abatement Grant
EntSun News/11101893
~ Mesa, AZ - The City of Mesa Public Safety Support Department's (MPSS) Forensic Services Division has been granted a substantial amount of $473,881 from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety. This grant, awarded by the Oversight Council on Driving or Operating Under the Influence Abatement, will be used to enhance the Division's DUI blood drug screening process.
The funding will go towards purchasing new instrumentation and supplies to modernize the Division's current screening process. This will not only improve operational efficiency but also reduce reliance on supplies from sole-source vendors.
One of the main goals of this grant is to decrease case turnaround times for DUI and drug-impaired driving (DUID) investigations. Currently, it takes approximately 8-10 months for toxicological results to be provided to law enforcement and prosecutors. With these improvements, that time will be cut in half to 4-5 months. This will greatly support more efficient investigations and prosecutions for impaired driving cases.

The MPSS Forensic Services Division is responsible for providing forensic testing and crime scene response to support law enforcement investigations. They serve multiple police departments in the area including Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, and Queen Creek. With this grant-funded project, their analytical capacity will increase, operational efficiency will improve, and continuity of testing will be ensured. This will ultimately strengthen their ability to provide timely and reliable forensic toxicology services.
The City of Mesa Public Safety Support Department (MPSS) is made up of two essential divisions - 911 communications and Forensic Services. These divisions work together to provide crucial services and resources that support the Mesa Police and Fire & Medical Departments in keeping the community safe. Their focus is on administrative, operational, and support functions that help public safety personnel respond effectively and deliver high-quality services to Mesa residents.
This grant is a significant achievement for the MPSS Forensic Services Division as it allows them to continue their important work in supporting law enforcement investigations and keeping the community safe from impaired driving. With the improvements made possible by this grant, they will be able to provide even more efficient and reliable services to the Mesa community and beyond.
