City of Long Beach Invites Youth to Apply for Youth Advisory Council

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is seeking young individuals between the ages of 16 and 26 to join their Youth Advisory Council for its fifth year. The council, which falls under the Office of Youth Development, aims to provide a platform for youth to have a say in city policies, programs, and investments that directly impact them. Applications will be accepted until August 7th, 2026.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed the importance of investing in young people as they are the future of Long Beach. He also highlighted the valuable contributions that the Youth Advisory Council has made in shaping policies and programs that benefit the community.
To be eligible for the council, applicants must meet certain criteria such as being a resident of Long Beach and having a passion for issues affecting youth in the city. They must also be available to attend bi-monthly meetings at various locations across Long Beach.

The council consists of nine members representing each of the city's council districts and two at-large members who focus on promoting health equity in neighborhoods that are disproportionately impacted by violence, poverty, and adverse health outcomes. In addition to receiving a $50 stipend per meeting, members will also have access to professional coaching and leadership development opportunities provided by City Staff.
Applications can be submitted online through the application portal or in person at designated locations such as the Ronald R. Arias Health Equity Center, any Long Beach Public Library location, or any Parks, Recreation and Marine Teen Center during regular business hours.
Current Youth Advisory Council member Nyechelle Shaw shared her experience serving on the council and how it has changed her perspective on leadership and civic engagement. She emphasized that youth voices are not only valued but essential in shaping real projects that impact young people in Long Beach.

In its fourth year, the Youth Advisory Council played an active role in various initiatives such as shaping the city's Mental Health is Just Health campaign and participating in the Youth Voices series with the Long Beach Community Action Partnership and PADNET. They also led the Youth Power Participatory Budgeting process for Measure US Youth Fund investments and organized Youth Connect 2026, a citywide celebration of youth leadership and creativity.
The council was established in response to recommendations from the 2022 Youth Design Sessions and works closely with city departments, commissions, community organizations, and the Mayor's Office to advance the Long Beach Youth Strategic Plan. Members also serve as district liaisons to ensure diverse youth perspectives are represented in city initiatives.
