City of Columbia wins Missouri Municipal League award for Weatherization Grant Program
EntSun News/11058508
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia has been recognized for its innovative efforts in improving the quality of life for its residents. The city was recently announced as one of four winners of the 2025 Missouri Municipal League (MML) Innovation Award for its Home Weatherization Grant Program.
The MML Innovation Award is given to municipalities that have implemented outstanding projects that enhance the well-being of their communities. It also highlights the dedication and creativity of local government officials.
The Home Weatherization Grant Program was established by the City of Columbia to address housing affordability issues. Many homeowners in the city struggle with high utility costs due to inadequate insulation in their homes, making it difficult for them to make ends meet.

Launched in October 2024, the program offers no-cost insulation and weatherization upgrades through the city's contractor to income-qualified homeowners. This includes those who receive utility assistance, are enrolled in utility payment plans, have experienced disconnections, or live in qualified census blocks.
City Manager De'Carlon Seewood expressed his pride and gratitude for the recognition, stating that it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of city staff, particularly those at the Housing and Neighborhood Services department and their new Community Connectors initiative. He also emphasized how this program is making a positive impact on some of Columbia's most vulnerable residents by reducing utility burdens, improving housing affordability, and fostering stronger and more connected neighborhoods.
Out of 18 submissions from municipalities across Missouri, Columbia was chosen as one of four winners alongside Ozark, Dardenne Prairie, and Butler. The awards were evaluated based on creativity, impact, and replicability.
