City of Bloomington Utilities Issues Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Monroe County
EntSun News/11102949
~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has issued a precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Monroe County after detecting elevated levels of turbidity in the drinking water. This advisory is not an emergency, but CBU is taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of its customers.
According to CBU, the Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until 3 p.m. on Monday, September 21, unless otherwise notified. In the meantime, CBU recommends that all residents boil their water for at least 2 minutes before consuming it. This includes water used for drinking, cooking, and oral hygiene. More information can be found on the CBU website or by calling 812-339-1444.
The decision to issue a Boil Water Advisory was made after routine monitoring showed turbidity levels above the maximum contaminant level of 1.0 Unit permitted by drinking water standards. Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness or haziness of water caused by particles suspended in it. At elevated levels, turbidity can interfere with the effectiveness of water treatment.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) requires public water systems to issue a precautionary Boil Water Advisory when turbidity levels reach 1 Unit or above. The elevated turbidity was a result of lower-than-normal water production at the Monroe Water Treatment Plant due to overnight storm-related power outages. This led to low water levels in the plant's primary storage tank and contributed to the increased turbidity.
CBU staff responded promptly by increasing water-quality monitoring and adjusting plant operations to stabilize production and turbidity levels at the treatment plant. They continue to closely monitor these levels as the system returns to normal operating conditions.
Residents are advised to follow certain instructions during this time. If their tap water appears cloudy, they should run cold water from a sink or tub until clear water flows from the faucet. Additionally, all water used for drinking, cooking, and oral hygiene should be boiled for at least 2 minutes before consumption. However, it is not necessary to boil water for other household uses such as bathing or laundry.
CBU will directly alert customers with current contact information listed on their account. For any questions or concerns, residents can contact CBU at 812-339-1444 or via email.
CBU has assured that a follow-up news release will be issued once the precautionary Boil Water Advisory has been lifted. Until then, residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated on the situation.
