City of Bloomington Utilities Awarded $2.3 Million EPA Grant to Strengthen Water System Resilience
EntSun News/11102007
~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has been awarded a $2.375 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to improve the resilience of its drinking water system. This funding comes through the EPA's Midsize and Large Drinking Water System Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability grant program, which aims to support projects that enhance utilities' ability to withstand and recover from disruptions.
The EPA announced a total of $11 million in resilience grants to 10 midsize and large drinking water systems across the country. CBU received the largest award in this grant program, alongside the City of San Diego, California.
CBU plans to use the grant funding to strengthen its water system by making upgrades to the Monroe Water Treatment Plant. These upgrades include installing backup generators and enhancing control systems at the facility. The plant is located in a rural area near Lake Monroe, surrounded by dense forests, making it particularly vulnerable to power outages caused by high winds and fallen trees.

Katherine Zaiger, Utilities Director for CBU, expressed her gratitude for this opportunity to enhance resiliency at their water treatment plant. She emphasized that investments like this are crucial in ensuring continuous service for customers in light of increased threats from extreme weather events and cybersecurity attacks targeting water utilities.
As Bloomington continues to grow and face evolving challenges in its water supply, investments in resilience are essential for maintaining reliable service. This grant will not only help CBU strengthen critical infrastructure today but also build a more secure and dependable drinking water system for Bloomington's future.
