CHICAGO ~ Chicago welcomed 83 new first responders today as Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Fire Department (CFD) Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt celebrated the graduation of 42 Firefighter EMTs and 41 Fire Paramedics from the Fire Academy. The ceremony, held at Navy Pier, honored the dedication and hard work of these individuals as they embark on a career of bravery, selflessness, and service.

He also acknowledged the importance of their role in the city's safety and thanked them for their tireless dedication to building safer communities every day.
Fire Commissioner Nance-Holt echoed Mayor Johnson's sentiments, emphasizing that graduation is just the beginning for these firefighters and paramedics. The candidates who graduated today completed a rigorous six-month training course at the Robert Quinn Fire Academy. This training included courses for certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and Illinois Firefighter or Fire Paramedic. The program not only focused on basic firefighting skills but also taught operation in confined spaces and specific rescue techniques for search, rescue, and extrication. Additionally, candidates learned how to coordinate medical services with hospitals, mental health clinicians, and dispatchers.
Before joining the Fire Department, paramedics are required to be licensed by an accredited institution. The new members will begin their district assignments with CFD Emergency Medical Services this month. After graduation, they will be assigned to various firehouses based on department needs and lottery selection.
The newly graduated paramedics will start their district assignments with CFD Emergency Medical Services later this July. As they begin their careers, Chicago is grateful for their dedication and commitment to keeping the city safe.
