EntSun News/11058608
~ SACRAMENTO - As California prepares for peak wildfire season, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the launch of a new AI-powered chatbot on CAL FIRE's website. The chatbot, called "Ask CAL FIRE," aims to provide quick and reliable access to critical fire prevention resources and emergency information in 70 languages.

The tool, which is part of the state's efforts to modernize public communication tools and expand equitable access to vital information, is designed to help Californians easily find answers to commonly asked questions. It also serves as a two-way tool, providing real-time insights to CAL FIRE on what information people are looking for.

Governor Newsom stated, "California is harnessing technology and innovation to help people when it matters most. Ahead of peak wildfire season, we're launching a new chatbot that will connect Californians with real-time information and resources in the language they speak. This is yet another way we're transforming government to better serve people."

The chatbot offers a simpler and more accessible way for users to get the answers they need at any time of day or night. Whether it's home hardening strategies, defensible space guidance, or updates on wildfires over 10 acres across the state, the chatbot can guide users to the appropriate pages for more detailed information.

CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler emphasized the importance of fast-moving information in an era of fast-moving wildfires. He stated, "Tools like this help ensure Californians from all walks of life get the guidance they need to stay safe and informed."

This initiative highlights CAL FIRE's commitment to utilizing innovation and technology in fighting fires smarter. The agency has been recognized by TIME magazine for its Best Invention of 2023 – using Artificial Intelligence to monitor over 1,000 cameras throughout the state and detect wildfires faster.

In addition to technological advancements, California has also invested in building up its aerial firefighting fleet – the largest in the world. This includes recently added firefighting Fire Hawk helicopters that are capable of operating at night, allowing for quicker and more effective containment of wildfires.

Governor Newsom has also been appointed co-chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of 24 governors working towards achieving a net-zero carbon pollution future in America through state-led climate action.

The chatbot can be accessed on CAL FIRE's website, fire.ca.gov, where users can also find wildfire preparedness resources for their homes, families, and communities. The state has doubled its budget for CAL FIRE in recent years and has dramatically increased efforts to prevent wildfires by treating nearly 2 million acres of land. With these measures in place, California is better equipped to handle the upcoming peak wildfire season.
