California: Governor Newsom proclaims Memorial Day
EntSun News/11093043
~ Sacramento - On May 25, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom declared the day as "Memorial Day" in honor of those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation and its values. The proclamation was issued to recognize the brave individuals who have served something greater than themselves.
The tradition of Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War and was formalized in a "Memorial Day Order" that emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring those who have fallen in service. Since then, Memorial Day has expanded to honor all those lost in wars, even before it was officially established as a national day of remembrance by Congress in 1971.
On this day, many Californians will participate in ceremonies at various veterans' cemeteries across the state, as well as local cemeteries where fallen soldiers are laid to rest. Their names are also memorialized on monuments throughout the country, including the Capitol Mall in Washington D.C. and Capitol Park in Sacramento. Towns and cities nationwide have also dedicated memorials to their own sons and daughters who have lost their lives in war.
Governor Newsom paid tribute to these fallen heroes with gratitude and respect, acknowledging their sacrifices to protect the rights and freedoms that are cherished by all Americans. He also urged Californians to remember and care for the veterans who are still with us, their brothers and sisters in arms.

In honor of these brave individuals, Governor Newsom ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on all state buildings and grounds throughout California. He also invited all Californians to participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m., a shared moment of silence to recognize the servicemen and women who put their country before all else.
The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on May 17th with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting it with her signature. In his proclamation, Governor Newsom declared May 25, 2026, as "Memorial Day" in the state of California.
In other recent news, California has mobilized over 785 emergency personnel to support response efforts in Orange County, including highly specialized hazardous materials experts. This comes after Governor Newsom submitted a request to President Trump for an emergency declaration to support ongoing response operations in the county. The state has also declared a state of emergency in Orange County and made additional shelter sites available as they continue to manage an ongoing chemical incident in Garden Grove.
As Californians come together to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring our fallen heroes.
