Boston: Temporary Limitation of Archives Access Due to Construction

~ Boston Archives Announces Changes to Operations During Construction
The Boston Archives has recently announced important changes to their operations as they undergo construction. These changes are necessary to protect and preserve the city's historical records for future generations.
One of the major changes is the relocation of a significant portion of their collections to an off-site storage facility. This is being done to ensure the safety and security of the records during construction.
However, this means that there will be a delay in record retrieval for researchers. Due to the off-site storage, same-day or walk-in research requests will not be accommodated. Instead, there will be a minimum waiting period of 5 business days for records to be recalled to the archive reading room.

To help researchers plan their visits during this time, the Boston Archives has provided some tips. They advise individuals to search their online catalog beforehand to identify specific records or record groups needed. It is also recommended to submit a request at least one week in advance by contacting archives@boston.gov or 617-635-1195. Once the materials have arrived on-site, a staff member will confirm and schedule a research appointment.
The Archives also reminds researchers that many popular collections and photographs are available digitally and encourages them to utilize this resource during construction.
The Boston Archives acknowledges that these changes may cause inconvenience for researchers and apologizes for any disruptions in research timelines. However, they assure that these updates are necessary to ensure the safety and accessibility of Boston's irreplaceable history for generations to come.
